NinjaDent vs. the other ways to post EOBs.
A fair look at typing EOBs by hand, Open Dental’s own ERA auto-posting, outsourced posting and NinjaDent. Use whatever works. Most offices will use more than one.
Side by side
What each option actually does.
We don’t name other companies or make claims about their products. Where a column says “varies”, ask that provider the questions below.

Paper vs. ERA
Already on ERA? Keep it.
An ERA (electronic remittance advice) is the electronic version of an EOB, and an EFT is the matching electronic deposit. When a payer sends ERAs and Open Dental can process them, that’s often the easiest path, and NinjaDent isn’t meant to replace it.
NinjaDent is for the EOBs that still arrive on paper: the ones someone opens, reads and types in by hand.
- ERA that auto-posts cleanlyLet Open Dental handle it.
- Paper EOB in the mailScan it. NinjaDent reads it, applies your rules and posts after you approve.
- A doubtful lineNinjaDent holds just that line for your team.
- A denial you can argueNinjaDent raises an appeal alert.
Choosing a tool
Six questions to ask any EOB posting tool.
Including us. Here are NinjaDent’s answers.
Does it post directly into Open Dental, or hand you a file to key in?
NinjaDent posts insurance payments, write-offs and supplemental payments to Open Dental through Open Dental’s official API, and attaches the EOB.
Can you set your office’s own write-off rules?
Yes. An onboarding questionnaire sets up 80+ office-specific rules, like in-network write-offs, under-$100 write-offs, cash prices for denied procedures and coverage-ended handling.
Does anything post before you approve?
No. In this early phase, nothing posts until someone in your office clicks Approve on the approval page.
If one line is wrong, does the whole EOB stop?
No. The doubtful line waits for your team; the rest of the EOB still posts.
Can you check and undo what it posted?
Yes. NinjaDent reads back what landed in Open Dental to verify it, and keeps an undo log.
Where does patient data go?
NinjaDent runs on a HIPAA-configured AI setup, and patient data stays in your office’s systems. We don’t claim any certification.
